Last week, the Church of God in Christ held its national convention in St. Louis with about 28,000 in attendance. In a video that’s gone viral, there is a man who attended the convention who announces that he isn’t gay anymore in hilarious fashion. Check it out:
There’s a couple of things I find very wrong with this. First of all, contrary to popular belief, sexuality is not a choice. No one chooses to be straight or gay. If you don’t believe me, ask yourself this question, how old were you when you decided your sexuality?
Now another big problem I find with this is the pressure of religion and the black church in particular to force someone to be who they are not. I always find it sad when people can’t be who they are, especially when it’s painfully obvious it’s who they really are. Can you imagine something that you find innate in you being called wrong or taboo? The fact that people lie to themselves in order to be in accordance with religion or a church is just plain wrong.
A lot of religious people miss the point of religion and don’t get the big idea or picture. There are plenty of things in the Bible that people pick and choose what they want to emphasize and if people stop focusing on actions and start thinking about people things will change.
No you can’t pray the gay away and if you are still holding onto that archaic belief, you still have a ways to go on getting a grip with reality.
