Bennie Thompson is the representative for the second district of Mississippi which includes the Mississippi Delta and the states most populous city and capital, Jackson. He’s been a representative for 20+ years. He’s the only Democratic delegate in the state.
Thompson is described as a moderate Democratic follower by Govtrack.us. He sits on a host of Committee’s including the House Committee on Homeland Security where he is ranking member.
Thompson has been a champion for Mississippi as a whole and not just his district. After Katrina he advocated for federal funds to be dispersed in Mississippi, especially along the coastal areas which isn’t even his district. Thompson is considered a moderate Democrat within the US House of Representatives and will often vote with party lines. He however has proven to disagree with the Obama administration during issues of federal conduct.
According to Ballotpedia, Thompson criticized the White House in early October for its investigation into a Secret Service prostitution scandal in Colombia. He stated that the probe was insufficient and left many questions unanswered. In an email, he wrote: “It is clear that the investigations were not thorough and did not tell the whole story – and I still have concerns about the internal investigative process.”
There is no Republican challenger in the Second District of Mississippi on the ballot this year. Thompson competed against Damien Fairconetue in the Democratic primary on June 3, 2014, easily defeating him with 96 percent of the vote.
Bennie is the only good choice out of all our delegates. He one of my favorites for his candor and telling it like it is. He called Obamacare opponents racist and also called Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas an ‘uncle Tom’. Anybody that does that is cool with me.
