“I’m Just Saying..”:: How Slavery Still Exists Today

So I was home sick last week and found myself consumed by a “Beyond Scared Straight” Marathon. For those of you who do not know “Beyond Scared Straight” is a documentary show on channel A&E where at risk youth in various cities and states visit their local jails and prisons and live the life of prisoner for a day or so to scare the youth on the right path.

Although, the program is focused on the children I found myself more focused on the inmates. It may have been the fever talking but there were some fine brothers in these prisons. And there was a lot of them. It is one thing to know that statistically black males are the majority in U.S. prisons but to actually see it is jaw-dropping. With numbers like these it demands you to ask the question, why? Why are there so many of the same young black males apart of the prison system?

Some of us blame their parents, some blame the individual, some blame the judicial system and some even blame the economy. I believe all of these things play a part in the issue but they are not the only sources that cause this epidemic.

The influential cause comes from a simple letter written 302 years ago by Willie Lynch. You know, the “How to Control your Slave for Dummies” manual written by a British West Indies slave owner in 1712. Within the letter, Lynch guaranteed that,

Well, it’s been 302 years since he wrote this letter and guess what? He was right.

Lynch’s goal was to destroy the original role of the black male. Male slaves were either brutally murdered in front of others, not allowed to marry or sold to another plantation after the birth of their child. With the black men being murdered for being strong and leaving their women and children, it created a generational basis. And this changed women and parenting styles were reprogrammed. The traditional family dynamic was changed.

Lynch confirmed, “By women being left alone, feeling unprotected, with the MALE IMAGE DESTROYED, the ordeal caused her to move from her psychologically dependent state to a frozen, independent state. In this frozen, psychological state of independence, she will raise her MALE and female offspring in reversed roles. For FEAR of the young male’s life, she will psychologically train him to be MENTALLY WEAK and DEPENDENT, but PHYSICALLY STRONG.”

The consequences of these actions show in our prison systems today. When a person is weak mentally they are vulnerable and easily influenced whether positively or negatively.  If you are in chains mentally eventually your body will be in chains too.

There are too many males physically perfect but a mental mess. No ambition. No confidence. No pride. No originality. We can’t baby these boys any longer because they won’t be boys forever.
